Symptoms

Although Blepharitis can be uncomfortable, it usually does not cause permanent damage to your eyesight. Symptoms include:

  • Watery eyes
  • Red eyes and eyelids
  • A gritty, burning or stinging sensation in the eyes
  • Greasy eyelids
  • Itchy eyelids
  • Flaking of the skin around the eyes
  • Crusted eyelashes upon awakening
  • Sticky eyelids
  • Excessive blinking
  • Light sensitivity
  • Eyelashes that grow abnormally (in the wrong direction)
  • Loss of eyelashes

Treatment

Adding eye hygiene, such as washing your eyes and using warm compresses, to your daily regimen is often enough to treat blepharitis. However, if it is not, your doctor may prescribe medication to fight infection and control inflammation.
